Types of silk saree

• Katan silk — pure twisted silk, the base of the classic Banarasi saree. Heavy, lustrous, made for weddings.
• Dupion silk — a crisp silk with a natural slub and a two-tone sheen.
• Tussar silk — a textured, matte wild silk with a warm golden tone.
• Matka silk — coarse-textured handloom silk with a rustic, rich look.
• Soft, Tabby and space silk — lighter blended silks that drape easily, often with prints, sequins or zari borders.

How to tell pure silk

Pure silk feels smooth and warms to the touch, has a soft, uneven lustre rather than a flat shine, and creases softly. Synthetic blends look uniformly glossy and feel slippery or cold. Each product page states the fabric as described by the weaver.

Caring for a silk saree

Dry clean only. Store it folded in a cotton cloth away from sunlight and moisture, and refold it every few months so the creases do not weaken the fabric.
